About Open Source
This is the Open Source category on Alternative Biz. It lists products and businesses whose code is public, so you can read it, change it and often run it on your own hardware. People usually arrive here with a specific problem: a paid tool has become too costly, too closed or too tied to one vendor, and they want a way out.
Browse the four subcategories below or use the search box at the top. Each listing sits in one main category, and the page shows everything in this category and its subcategories, with filters to narrow the list. Newest listings come first by default, and you can sort by community votes instead. Votes can never be bought, so the order reflects what visitors actually think. When you compare options, check the licence terms, how recently the project was updated, how easy it is to install, and what you would lose by switching back.

Open Source: questions answered
- What belongs in the Open Source category?
- Products and businesses built around publicly available code: apps, libraries, self-hosted software and AI models or tooling. If the main appeal is that people can inspect, modify or host it themselves, this is the right home. Closed products that only offer an API belong elsewhere.
- How do I choose between the subcategories?
- Pick the one that matches how people will use your product. Open source apps are finished tools for end users. Developer libraries are code to build with. Self-hosted tools are run on your own server. Open source AI covers models and AI tooling. Choose the closest fit as your main category.
- How do I get my open source project listed here?
- Go to /submit and paste your website address. An AI drafts the profile from that site, and you check and edit every field before anything goes live. A paid launch costs $5, while a free listing joins a queue of about 1-2 weeks.
- Can a project appear in more than one category?
- Every listing has one main category, chosen at submission and included free. If your project spans areas, such as a self-hosted tool with AI features, a paid upgrade adds up to 3 more categories for $5.
- What should I compare when choosing an open source alternative?
- Look at the licence, how actively the project is maintained, how much setup it needs, and whether your data can be exported. Read the community reviews on each listing, which show what founders of other listed products found good or frustrating about it.
