FAQ
What are the system requirements and limitations for Ardour?
Your CPU, audio interface and disk system are the only limits to what you can do with Ardour. There is no limit to the number of tracks, busses, sample rate, channels, sends/inserts per track, or plugins per track. Latency is limited only by hardware, BIOS, OS kernel, video drivers, and WiFi drivers. As a general rule, most modern computers can handle 24 tracks with moderate plugin processing without much problem.
Does Ardour support video and synchronization for film projects?
Yes, Ardour provides comprehensive video timeline support for film and video projects. You can import any video and see a frame-by-frame view locked to audio/MIDI regions. The built-in video monitor syncs footage to the timeline with timecode support. You can extract, mute, and re-record audio, then export the final mix. LTC support allows you to sync sources and split tasks across machines.
What types of plugins does Ardour support?
Ardour supports multiple plugin formats including AudioUnit, LV2, VST2/VST3, and LADSPA formats, with support for PreSonus extensions of VST. It can extend functionality with thousands of native plugins for processing and virtual instruments, and supports MIDI processors. You can automate any parameters and control them with MIDI Learn.
Can Ardour be used for live performance?
Yes, Ardour includes live performance capabilities. You can use Novation Launchpad or Ableton Push 2 to trigger clips playback, repeat, and transition in the built-in non-linear sequencer. You can record and instantly replay audio and MIDI clips, and use cue markers in the Editor to trigger cues anywhere on the timeline, merging traditional and cue sequencer approaches.
